Chesterfield sofas are instantly recognisable and enduringly comfortable - a design that has remained largely unchanged since the early 1800s, and which is known for its sweeping curved arms and deep buttons set into the back.
These are iconic, statement pieces of furniture, yet unlike some furniture bought for its style rather than its function, Chesterfield sofas will actually outlast many other couches of similar size.
In fact, it is this hardwearing quality that features in the myth of their invention - although there is some dispute as to how true or false that tale may be.
The story goes that Lord Phillip Stanhope, the 4th Earl of Chesterfield, commissioned the first sofa in this design, with arms as high as the seat back, and the distinctive buttoned upholstery and relatively low seat that still survives to this day.
According to the legend, his design was inspired by one simple aim: that a gentleman should be able to sit comfortably, without creasing his clothes.
His creation might have remained as a single bespoke piece, except for a misunderstanding on his death bed, when the Earl told an attending servant to "give Mr Dayrolls a chair".
Mr Dayrolls, his visiting godson, was given not just somewhere to sit during his visit, but an entire Chesterfield sofa to take home with him - an interpretation of the Earl's instruction that might not have been what he originally intended, if this part of the tale is true at all.
The lucky Mr Dayrolls was reputedly struck by the practical design of his newfound sofa, but also by how its aesthetic appeal seemed to increase with age and the visual effects of wear and tear.
Eventually the general design became requested by other members of the aristocracy, and found its way into the lexicon of furniture makers everywhere.
The truth behind this tale is open to dispute - and many who have researched the story say there is nothing in print to support the legend, which is often the case with folk myths handed down through word of mouth.
However, there's no denying the elegance and enduring appeal of Chesterfield sofas, which make a strong statement in any bar, restaurant or hotel reception.
