Members' clubs have a duty to provide for their members' needs, and comfortable club furniture in a good state of repair is one way in which you can ensure you are doing so.
Recent research from comparison site Gocompare.com ranked under-utilised club membership fees among the top ten wastes of money for cash-strapped Britons.
Although only 1% of people are estimated to be affected by the issue, it appears close behind concerns like excessive TV subscriptions and Direct Debits that should have been cancelled, as areas in which some Britons overspend unnecessarily.
Claire Peate, customer insight manager at the site, says: "A regular spring clean of your finances to make sure that you are getting the best deals ... can plug significant leaks in your finances."
For club owners and operators, however, members reassessing their finances can have an unwelcome effect when it comes to time for subscriptions to be renewed.
In order to avoid becoming a casualty of Britons' belt-tightening, venues have to be sure that they are creating a welcoming environment throughout their premises.
This includes in social areas such as the bar or lounge, where comfortable club furniture can give people a place to relax that will entice them back time and time again.
Once you have created an environment that your members want to return to, you might want to point out to them that maintaining their membership can actually save them money overall.
Many social clubs offer bar prices that would not be matched in an ordinary pub, potentially helping their members to save substantial amounts on evenings out.
In this sense, membership fees are like many of the other items on Gocompare.com's list of 'wasted' money, as if used correctly they can save households on their outgoings, whereas if used incorrectly they can be unnecessarily costly.
This compares with other entries like Direct Debits, which many utility providers will offer a discount for, and multi-play television, broadband and telephone packages, which can save families overall on multimedia contracts.
With a combination of low food and drink prices, and comfortable club furniture, venue operators can make sure that their premises become a wallet-friendly home from home for all their members, and are never perceived as a drain on their finances.
