Britain has become more of a 'Cash Happy' nation over the past year, with an increase in disposable incomes per household, according to a report from SunLife.
The savings and protection provider surveyed how much 'spare' cash British households have each week, leaving some to set aside into savings, or for treats such as meals out or tickets for live entertainment events.
On average, households have £102 spare to spend each week - £44 per person - and this is up by nearly a quarter compared with research from a year ago.
A pragmatic 54% said that if they were to receive an extra £20 on top of their current income, they would put it into their savings, while 35% said they would buy some new clothing with it.
But interestingly, this is not what people think should be done with spare cash - it is only what they think they would do with their own.
Instead, experiences proved to make people the happiest, ranging from bowling at the top, to theatre trips in second place, and hobbies and sports in third.
Eating out, day trips and music events were 4th-6th, reading a newspaper or magazine ranked 7th, and cinema trips came 8th, with savings and clothing coming at the very bottom of the top ten.
The list shows that although many Britons say they would act 'responsibly' by saving any extra spare income, in fact more people would feel happier if they spent it on an activity or experience, or on a meal out.
For the entire hospitality trade, this is good news with disposable incomes heading in the right direction, supporting an increase in trade and spend per customer, and ultimately helping to fund investments in new furniture for hospitality premises.
Good-quality hospitality trade furniture can help to underpin the aspirations of customers whose income and expenditure are on the increase - and a good leather sofa goes a long way towards creating a luxurious feeling interior.
If your customer base is on the up, make sure you have the right hospitality trade furniture to suit, even if only by adding one or two statement pieces to help make your existing furniture look a little less shabby and a little more chic.
