Health food fads come and go, but there will always be cake - and with the popularity of the Great British Bake Off renewing the nation's love for sweet treats, it's a good time to make sure your cafe furniture can accommodate customers with the sweetest tooth of all.
In many cases, that means children and families, as figures from consumer analysts Mintel reveal, so it could be worthwhile ensuring you have child-friendly cafe furniture on hand.
"Families are the most important demographic to the cakes and cake bar market," the report says. "Purchasing of cakes in the UK is highest among parents and people living in households of three or more people."
The findings relate to sales of cakes throughout the UK, including retail settings, but some of the observations are equally applicable to cafes, restaurants and snack bars.
For instance, Mintel found 32% of parents consider cake to be a suitable snack for their children, a figure that rises to 40% in households of five or more people.
"There are significant opportunities for more brands to tap into the strong family appeal - success among this demographic really would be the icing on the cake," Mintel add.
In terms of cafe furniture, there are a few options to cater for younger customers, without limiting yourself to high chairs that are only suitable for the very youngest.
For instance, a low sofa is a great way to allow children to sit alongside their parents or other family members, potentially fitting three customers into a space that might otherwise only accommodate two, and increasing your sales accordingly.
Lightweight stools are also an option, which parents can quickly move around to where they are needed, but which may be more on the right scale for younger customers than a full-size chair.
And finally, consider making sure you have some sturdy straight-backed chairs too, as many parents now carry with them a fabric sling or seat that can clip on to a chair back in order to convert it into a high chair.
Making sure you have cafe furniture that can do this allows them to maintain their own parenting style, as well as relieving you of the need to find a space to put up a high chair for those customers.
