US-style diner furniture could be one way for eateries across the UK to provide a visual indication of their inclusion of more classically American dishes on their menus.
Foodservice industry analyst Horizons reports that many traditional American foods are making it on to British menus - in some cases, at the expense of classic English 'pub grub'.
The top 20 main course menu items now listed on British menus no longer includes scampi and chips, for instance - and while the chip shop classic has 'wholetailed' it out of the hit list, gourmet hot dogs have seen a surge in popularity.
In particular, hot dogs served with a choice of toppings and sauces are fleshing out the menu options, meaning you could be as likely to see an American-style chilli dog on the menu as a classic frankfurter with onions, mustard and ketchup.
Horizons says it is not only the inclusion of American-style hot dogs that is making more British menus read like those you'd find stateside, so there are plenty of reasons to consider investing in diner furniture if your eatery is riding this trend.
A greater variety of 'slaw' is emerging, which could be driven in part by restaurants wanting to put more self-made side dishes on their menus, with the option of adding their signature touch by varying the ingredients from classic British coleslaw.
Black & blue steak is a further new entrant into 'British' cuisine, having been imported from our transatlantic neighbours in recent years, and has been making steady in-roads into the market ever since.
Other traditionally popular meals - including chicken curry and beef lasagne - have seen a decline in the analyst's Menurama report, while steaks and burgers have dropped in average serving weight.
However, burgers are still the most widely listed menu item of all, and have grown by 13% year-on-year in their menu penetration; hot dogs, in comparison, are up a massive 85%.
Nicola Knight, director of services at Horizons, says: "We have been surprised by these Menurama results, which show a significant growth of meat-based, American-style dishes across the menus of a broad selection of eating-out establishments."
