The Fanback Side Chair has an interesting heritage dating back to the 19th century when these vintage styles of chairs were first manufactured by the famous Thonet Chair Company. These chairs were originally designed by Michael Thonet who utilised innovative steam bending technology to create highly attractive and unique looking pieces at mass production prices so the savings could be passed onto buyers. This ability to achieve a chair which looked individual but did not cost a fortune was an incredibly popular notion and still is today!
The steam bending process allows continuous lengths of timber to be shaped accurately into forms that when combined together make strong and aesthetically pleasing chairs. The steam bending process also retains the natural strength of the timber and is far superior to other methods of preparing bent wood forms because of the strength it creates.
The Fanback side chair can be supplied with polished wooden seat or with an upholstered seat pad in a range of attractive contract grade fabrics. These chairs are very popular as bar, restaurant or café chairs and are often selected with wooden or cast iron tables such as the Wellington or Scroll Tables.
