A trip to the pub is so much more than simply enjoying a tasty beverage. For many, it represents a chance to connect with their community, meet with friends, laugh and be themselves.
The local pub can, therefore, find itself being an important part of many people’s wellbeing. Not by drinking away troubles but rather being a place talk things out with friends in a comfortable environment.
Alzheimer Scotland has used the social elements associated with a trip to the pub to inspire a new project that helps people living with dementia, their friends and family socialise and relax in a normal, comfortable, family-friendly environment.
‘Beer with Buddies’ is a new traditional style pub onsite at Alzheimer Scotland’s Paisley day centre that acts as a deterrent for social isolation that is unfortunately common for those living with dementia.
Organisers were determined to get the interior style right, with a ‘local pub’ environment the preference. After searching for traditional pub style furniture to fit the brief, Alzheimer Scotland found Trent Furniture’s range which ticked the boxes for creating the right atmosphere.
“Trent Furniture staff have been very supportive and helpful. We are very grateful for the support with the project, Trent Furniture has been a big part in helping us turn our idea into a reality and something that we are very proud of,“ explains Deborah Edgar, community activity organiser at Alzheimer Scotland. “Beer with Buddies would like to say a huge thank you to Trent Furniture and their incredible team for helping us create such a wonderful project.”
To achieve the authentic pub atmosphere, shaker tables and Boston armchairs were ordered in dark oak, a typical finish for a traditional pub.
The Beer with Buddies project was subsequently launched in 2018 and sees approximately 26 people visit the event every month.
“We have had an overwhelmingly positive response from cares and people living with dementia. Each month we see new friendships blossoming, improved wellbeing and quality of life, this has exceeded the outcomes we had hoped for,” adds Deborah.
We were pleased to play a small part in the launch of this worthwhile project, and wish it every success in the future. Cheers to that!
