In the UK, we love eating out. The market is continuing to grow, and an area which is growing faster than any other is breakfast.
From eggs benedict with a vitamin packed smoothie, to a sausage cob with a cup of coffee, breakfast is becoming an important trend in the UK.
A recent advocate of the trend is the Cereal Killer Café which opened in 2014. Despite some initial scepticism about how they could possibly succeed, since their first opening, cafés have opened at two further locations in the UK – not bad for a couple of years’ work!
Eating out at breakfast markets
According to Allegra Foodservice, around 21 per cent of consumers eat out for breakfast with around 8 per cent doing so at least once a week. This equates to around 6.5 million people eating out in the UK every day.
Research from NPD also suggests that Brits are increasingly grabbing their first meal of the day out of the house. Since 2008, it estimates that the UK has eaten breakfast out an extra 107 million times, while lunch has lost 80 million visits in the same period.
The market has also developed in recent years. What was once an area seemingly exclusive to bacon and sausage fry-ups is now in line with modern trends: many restaurants and cafes now offer mueslis, avocados and smoothies amongst other healthy options.
However, despite all the quirky teas and seed and grains available, research shows that the nation's most ordered breakfast remains the original full English! Of breakfast items eaten out of the home, these are the five most popular:
- Cooked breakfast (eggs, bacon, beans, tomatoes etc.) – 42%
- Hot roll (bacon, sausage, egg roll) – 28%
- Toast – 19%
- Pastries (croissant, Danish, pain au chocolat) – 16%
- Fruit – 15%
Making the most of the growing breakfast market
With a number of cafés and breakfast providers now available in the UK, having a speciality or theme to differentiate yourself is key if you’re considering entering the breakfast market.
Whether it’s as an American diner that makes stacks of pancakes, fresh waffles and has refills of coffee, or a traditional English café that cooks the best fry-up in town, locally-sourced bacon sandwiches and has ranges of teas, a speciality is vital.
