The high street has taken a bit of a beating in recent years. Because of many factors, shops are closing, takings are down and fewer people are getting through the doors.
Some deem the high street to be on the decline to an ultimate death and with the rise of online shopping, it can be hard to argue otherwise. Deliveries and returns are getting ever faster, so there isn’t as much need for people to venture to the high street when they can get it delivered to their home for free.
How bars and restaurants are helping the high street
It could be that instead of dying, the high street is just evolving. The general public is no longer likely to nip to the high street for shopping alone. They are instead looking for a dynamic experience that offers more than just that, with food and drinks a popular piece to the puzzle.
New research shows that 75 per cent of UK adults visit the high street to eat and drink, rising to 87 per cent for 18-35 year olds. Of those questioned, the majority intend to spend more or the same amount on leisure and hospitality over the next year. It appears that bars and restaurants could be the key to encouraging customers, especially millennials, back to the high street.
Traditionally, the high street was a place for the public to go about their shopping needs. But as it is evolving it is now more a place where people can get together and socialise.
High streets that will thrive in the current climate will maintain the right mix of shops, bars, restaurants and leisure activities. By offering a variety of options, the high street can provide experiences that cannot be replicated online.
