In the past we've mentioned the importance of having hotel furniture that can accommodate modern-day electronics devices, for example a desk and chair that are comfortable to use for working on a laptop - possibly with a nearby electrical socket for guests who need a mains power supply.
But research from OnePoll seems to suggest this is a need that will only grow as the current mature generation, Generation Y (often referred to as Millennials) give way to the maturing Generation Z.
These are still currently below the age of 18, so there's a little breathing space before they become the main spending power in the hospitality market, but when they do the transition to a truly digital lifestyle is likely to be complete.
For example, whereas Generation Y can remember the days before the internet was widely available - and especially before broadband connections became commonplace - Generation Z have grown up with widespread high-speed wireless internet.
As such, for them, the boundary between the real and digital world is not just blurred, but is non-existent.
In terms of the hospitality sector in particular, this means 'checking in' to your current location online is likely to become increasingly popular, both in terms of actually checking into your hotel room, and updating your geographical status on social networks that support this capability.
For hoteliers, it also means that the days are gone when electricity usage would drop almost to zero overnight; instead, this is when an ever-increasing proportion of guests will want to recharge a growing number of devices.
This makes it even more important to have hotel furniture that is easy to move, so all kinds of devices can be used comfortably, whether that means positioning a chair close to a desk or table to work on a laptop, or placing it with good arm clearance when working on a mobile touchscreen device like a tablet or smartphone.
In any case, make electrical sockets easy to access too, so guests are not tempted to drag heavy furniture away from the walls in the pursuit of a mains supply; with digital technology becoming first-nature and airline security requiring that batteries are charged on take-off, the importance of a simple plug socket has never been greater.
