Hotel furniture that makes a twin room suitable for two independent guests could see an increase in demand, if a current trend among single tourists succeeds in taking hold of consumers' imagination in general.
According to a Mintel Trend Observation report, services are now springing up that are akin to dating services, but without the element of romance - instead, they simply pair up would-be tourists so that they can book into twin rooms without having to pay a single-person supplement.
These services are so far powered by social networking platforms like Facebook, and give individuals the chance to review their matches, just like on a dating site, and choose one they are happy with, or create a listing of their own in the hope of finding a like-minded traveller.
If a successful match is made, the two travellers simply share a room - which demands a certain level of trust on the one hand, but is largely comparable with sharing a dorm in a youth hostel in many ways.
Mintel analyst Catherine McColl writes: "The stigma once associated with being single is on the decline as this demographic continues to grow in both number and stature across the globe ... and, in recent years, we've seen the number of products and services targeting these singletons skyrocket, from restaurant concepts to first-aid kits and clothing."
In terms of travel, it is not only people's choices at their destination, such as their hotel room, that are being influenced by a greater prevalence of single customers; some rail operators have already launched single-only carriages, according to Mintel.
For hotel operators keen to cater for this growing customer demographic, there are several options, the most obvious of which is simply to have rooms equipped with the correct hotel furniture for a single resident - perhaps not a single bed, but a comfortable chair that's suited to one, and so on.
But the trend observed by Mintel in this report hints that it might also be wise to make sure twin rooms are truly equipped for two separate people - with two chairs of equal comfort, two side tables, and two of any other item of furniture that is included either as a necessity or as a luxury.
