The recent horsemeat scandal has rocked the supermarket industry, but if anything, it's a chance to increase the number of people occupying your cafe furniture by demonstrating the hospitality industry's commitment to high standards.
While ready meals have been bearing much of the brunt of the press coverage of the story, a broad range of different foods have been tested for traces of horsemeat, and highlighting this to your customers could be a positive move.
As John Dyson, food adviser at the British Hospitality Association points out: "The hospitality industry buys fresh food, which is already subject to strict legislation.
"For our members, the origin and traceability of food is vital and many of our members pride themselves on a deep knowledge of their local suppliers."
Many operators within the industry are now testing their meat supplies for horsemeat - and where supplies are found to be as they should be, it is worth highlighting this to customers.
In particular, the latest Food Standards Agency report shows that no raw materials or ingredients have, at any time so far, been found to contain horsemeat.
Of a total of 3,634 tests carried out by February 22nd, 3,599 - over 99% - were found to be free from horsemeat.
Publicise these positive statistics, as opposed to the handful of cases where horse DNA has been found, and you can soon restore consumer confidence and attract standards-conscious diners into your cafe furniture.
