This weekend's Leicester Sky Ride has left potentially thousands of local residents keen to get on their bikes again, and sports clubs that are able to cater for that desire could gain a big boost out of it.
On Sunday August 28th, the city centre streets became traffic-free for much of the day, with a 6km loop of the city reserved just for cyclists - who were free to join whenever and wherever they liked, and cycle for as short or long of a distance as they wanted.
The route took in landmarks like Jubilee Square, the Town Hall and the Cultural Quarter, further highlighting the benefits of cycling as an activity for those who like to get out and about.
Councillor Adam Clarke, assistant city mayor for energy and sustainability, said: "We're seeing a year-on-year increase in the number of people choosing to commute into Leicester by bike. But we know that people don't start off by simply deciding to cycle to work."
Sports clubs can help to support residents who want to take up cycling, by offering changing room and shower facilities, as well as a comfortably furnished lounge to rest their weary rears after a day in the saddle.
Although cycling is a pursuit that can start from your own front door, for many people the other social aspects of joining a sports club - along with potentially the option to ride in a group or with a pace-setter - make membership a good proposition.
Some sports clubs may of course have a suitable area of private land for track cycling, or better access to off-road routes away from the city centre.
Attracting and keeping members regardless of the pursuits you offer depends on having the right sports club furniture on your premises - including comfy chairs and sofas for the post-workout relaxation session, and practical seating for spectators or short breaks from exercise.
If you have a public lounge area, make sure it's furnished suitably, with leather sofas always a good option for a sense of luxury - one area in which bar furniture and sports club furniture overlaps in many ways.
